Biology
I usually write about molecular biology. Molecular Biology is the study of DNA, proteins and the inner workings of the cell. That’s different from microbiology. Microbiology is the study of the really small stuff - bacteria, single-cell algae and fungi, slime molds, protozoa, and viruses. If you’re a whale, everything will seem ‘micro’ to you. (55 words)
Drawing
I spent part of each summer in the 80s at the Catalina Island Marine Institute. A big part of Sea Camp were the SCUBA and skindiving programs. During the three weeks of camp in 1984, I spent my down time drawing SCUBA divers (see below). I was thinking about this drawing as I sketched the diver for the microbiology/whale cartoon.
Here’s another marine mammal cartoon. This one was published in the latest issue of the American Bystander. (Link to order Issue #26)
